Pen and Wash
A Simple Pen and Wash Demonstration for Beginners
Have a go at this pen and wash sketch using only one colour.
The only materials you will need are: A piece of watercolour paper (Bockingford is ideal), Paynes Grey watercolour paint, a couple of round watercolour brushes, a waterproof, lightfast ink pen (edding Profipen - 0.5 or similar), water pot, tape, board and a 2B pencil.
Tape your watercolour paper to a board. Lightly sketch the following drawing with the 2B pencil and then go over it quite loosely with the pen. (If you are confident, go straight in with the pen).

Next, with the pen, add the tonal areas as in the following illustration.

Now for the watercolour. Wet the sky area and paint in a medium mix of Paynes Grey and use the same mix with a little water added for the middle distant field and the foreground. When dry, with a stronger mix of Paynes Grey paint the roof of the barn and oast and an even stronger mix for the bushes, the shadow side of the barn and the doorway.
Finally paint the foreground shadow with a mix similar to the roof tone.
